Spotting that funny plant climbing up the wall in the first photo was nice and in the second last photo, that’s an actual relic left from the World War II. I keep wanting to say it’s a bomb shelter, but that’s so not the right term.
2 Soak them overnight (or at least 8 hours) in 2 cups of water.
3 In the morning, strain all the almonds and give them a good wash.
4 Pop your almonds into the blender together with 3 cups of fresh water (I used boiled water). Blend for 1 minute.
5 Use a fine mesh strainer or a sifter as I did (pictured below) to separate the liquid and the pulp.
6 You can opt to sweeten your almond milk with vanilla bean or agave nectar (Thanks Diana for the tip!). I used my milk unsweetened as a base for breakfast smoothies (pictured below). Store your milk and pulp up to 4 days in the fridge.
In my bid to try new things/recipes/food/routine, I gave making almond milk a go. Any recipe that doesn’t require more than 5 items or 5 steps is fun in my books. While I don’t think I’m gonna be drinking almond milk regularly – it does cost $9 a pack from a health food store – it was fun to make and didn’t hurt to know about.
This is the Starbucks at Rochester Park. It’s spacious and they serve their drinks in different mugs, different from other outlets.
How has the new year been for you? It’s already day 8, my my my. So far I’ve been trying out new recipes and being on the ball about work. As for tomorrow, I’m planning on practicing my embroidery. Keeping busy and upbeat and excited I guess.
I had this ambitious plan to go around town, taking photos of all the christmas trees. Didn’t quite take ALL. On top of that, I thought it’d be fun and so cool to try out a new type of film too! Namely Lomography’s Redscale XR film. It’s not that I dislike the film, I totally used it wrongly. I don’t know why it didn’t cross my mind that I would want to retain the green in the trees and have it yellow where it’s yellow and blue where it’s blue. BOOO MELLY.
Merry Christmas folks! And if you don’t celebrate Christmas, happy holidays! Spend time with your loved ones :>
Tuesday was the strangest day of my life. Ben & I skidded while riding my scooter. My rear wheel punctured which led the scooter to go out of control. “It’s as if we were riding on ice” is pretty accurate. This happened on the expressway as well so we were doing 80 almost 90km/h, it was scary. We both blacked out but Ben came to first. I suffered some memory loss for a few minutes after coming around. Then it was to the hospital in an ambulance, my awesome friends came to see us, got us home. Made a police report. Bought some supplies from the pharmacy. Sat down to have our first proper meal of the day. When we finally settled down at home, where it was just the two of us, exhausted but with a million thoughts running through our minds… I looked at him and held him and I was just so so relieved and thankful that he’s still with me. And I, with him. Nothing in the world mattered as much. It could have turned out a lot worse, and we were so lucky to get away with some cuts and bruises.
Yesterday I got to hear this tape of my brother & I when we were really little, probably when he was five and I was two. My ahgong recorded us on this actual tape recorder!! I don’t have the slightest memory of this machine and never knew it existed, so imagine my face when my ahgong plugged everything in and pressed play. I didn’t think it would work, how dare I. Then two seconds in, I hear this voice which I don’t recognize as my brother’s. But it’s him and I couldn’t stop laughing – he was singing rhymes and it just doesn’t go with who he has grown into now, heh.
This short clip begins with me wailing and if you listen closely, you can hear my brother laughing in the background. Then you hear my ahgong laughing too, in real life. He goes on to ask in mandarin, whose voice is that and I say, I don’t know. He hears my brother’s voice and says it’s “kor kor” (which means elder brother). My brother goes on to say “mei mei” (that’s me) and I say “kor kor” (which is what I still call him today) then he asks if I wanna sit MRT which is the term for our train system here.
My friend, Mel, ‘s mom is having a garage sale tomorrow and some of us are gonna be there to help out. I don’t have a clue what’s gonna be for sale apart from “a lot of old Liz Claiborne dresses” yet but if you’re keen to know, check my instagram tomorrow. I’ll be sure to take some photos! My username’s greenlaundry. Come if you’re in the area, and even if you’re not, make your way down!
A big bowl of pasta! Instead I had sucky sushi for dinner and tried to make it up to my stomach with an orange muffin… which turned out sucky too! Ugh!
