Top: Coloursplash, Oktomat, Fisheye
Bottom: Talking Polaroid, Split-cam, Smena 8M, Kodak Ektralite 10, Lavec LT-002

These are all the film cameras i’ve amassed for some years now. Maybe amass isn’t appropriate to use since eight doesn’t count for a mass, does it? I avoided the word ‘collected’ because i’m not a collector of cameras. Each of them pretty much find their way into my hands without good reason. The ones i really want are too much money to pay for. So anyway the top row are the first few i started with. They are what i would call “the superficial fun” ones because they’re quite hollow character-wise. For me, that is. Pretty one-note in terms of photo-taking experience and the end result. What i hope for when i shoot with film is absolutely nothing. (It is quite an oxymoron isn’t it.) And shooting with the Coloursplash/Fisheye/Oktomat doesn’t give me that hopelessness.

The two cameras on the bottom right are the ones i recently won on ebay. No one bid on them which makes me feel a little adventurous about them. I only managed to find some examples here and here and here and here. The narrow Kodak uses 110 film, something i’ve never used before. Before i even get excited about taking photos with them, i have to see if they actually work… They might turn out to be trash but let’s hope not. A real case of hopelessness! Anyway since i’m talking about film cameras, i’m gonna take this chance to ask for recommendations or if you’ve used either of my new cameras - how do you like it or not? My rate of exposure to new cameras move at snail pace and i’d like to change that. I’m open to any camera and any story or you can shoot me. (Was that too bad a joke?)

I only own one film camera and it’s the fisheye from UO. My uncle gave me his old film one, but it doesn’t work and I don’t know where to take it to get fixed. Film kinda scares me though… but it’s still exciting to not know what the pictures look like till they’re printed.

You know what, I think I actually have one of those spy cameras! (the narrow Kodak one)
It had a film in it, which I got developed, but the photos were really fuzzy and uninteresting. I couldn’t find 110 film anywhere, so I never got to use it myself.
I have a smena, coloursplash and one of those cameras with four lenses (like your octagon, except… only with four :) of the ones you have. I like the smena best of those, but it broke last year, so I haven’t used it since. I want to get a new one!
I used to collect cameras, so I have a ton! But at the moment I am just using my Pentax ME super, because that’s what I brought with me to Asia. Altso a Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim. I might use that in Australia!
    Ahh! Cameras!

Katlin: A camera repair shop would do, and you can always get a quote first to see if it’s worth repairing. Passed-down cameras are a gem to me, if not displaying it is enough to smile at. I do hope to get more confident with film, it’s a black hole but it’s fun to get lost in it.

young: i like the smena best out of all too, and i’ve been thinking about getting the vivitar for the longest time. i don’t know why i never bother to - there, you made me bother now. i’m reading about the Pentax as i type this… it’s pretty cool, i wouldn’t guess it had auto function. i tend to get intimidated by such SLRs but whoop, i need to take some leaps someday.

HAHA………… SO LAME. SO PROUD OF YOU! hahahahaha…

Nice camera collection… next time bring them out and we play with them k?

super random: but I have the same rug I think… from Ikea… =D

  5. the_kitten on January 18th, 2009

I do not have that much expertise with film cameras, because when I still had mine, it was simply point and shoot and let’s hope the outcome is somehow acceptable ^^ I have a polaroid too (won it on ebay for only 5€), but no films!? 32€ for a few pics? Hmm. Anyway, my dad handed over his super old and super classic and SUPER EPIC old Canon T50, which is a SLR and analogue and film camera and SO great. The pictures taken with the old canon are far more athmospherical and charming than those of my digital SLR…

  6. roentarre on January 18th, 2009

Film cameras sometimes perform better than digital ones due to the film grain quality. These camers look so cute!

  7. clareassiral on January 18th, 2009

i always wanted the colorsplash and fisheye!! somehow i managed to destroy my one and only action sampler, might have pulled too hard. since were at cameras, been wanting to check, which model of dslr are you using?

  8. montague on January 18th, 2009

oh my - those look like so much fun! all of them…
though i don’t think i’ve actually used any of them!

The Smena 8M is a pretty nifty camera, if you can get used to its quirks, esp the non-working film counter and the little safety catch that you must cock before you can fire the shutter. It’s still a coated glass lens with good vignette so it’s quite close to the Lomo LC-A+ I would say. Try some slide in it and cross-process for brilliant results.

Sarah: you read my nonsense! i was stressing my bf out by asking him to read & see if he got my joke and i was literally breathing down his neck behind him. He didn’t anyway so 10 POINTS for SARAH, 0 POINTS FOR BENNYHO.

and, we really are twins now then. same rug love!

the_kitten: 32€ is severe for a pack of film! it costs about $26 here and i think it’s insane already. I googled the T50 and WOW. For some strange reason when the photo loaded, The Ten Commandments movie popped into my head - very random. Your dad is super for keeping something so precious in tact and handing it down to you, wish my dad was camera-cool.

roentarre: Yeah film cameras hold all the charm for me.

larissa: yikes! that must have sucked, i once tore a finished roll of film while holidaying in HK while winding it. very very sad.

    and i’m using a Nikon D40!

amy: you’re the queen of real serious photography, these cameras are child-play :D

Eileen: I once compared the smena to the LCA and my friend wasn’t too pleased. Price wise it’s a BIG difference but i honestly feel they produce quite similar results. And yes to slides - i am gonna do slides in 2009 :)

Eight seems like a lot to me, in a I’m totally jealous of you way… :)

  12. hazirah on January 19th, 2009

i own a lomo, used once…..and left the film in for more than a year. it’s still in there. I FAIL! hahahha i swear the film’s simply rotten in there….HAHAH

  13. yulanda on January 20th, 2009

Nice collection! I used to really want the Smena. I had a 110 when I was a kid…it was from McDonald’s of all places. I have no idea where it disappeared to though.

  14. Emily L. on January 20th, 2009

I love those cameras! I brought them here with me to the states but i can’t find film anywhere! haha
<3<3<3 those great collectibles! Use them and post pictures!

  15. ovenhaven on January 20th, 2009

I have a couple of lomo cameras, but the ones I enjoy most are Vivitar UWS and my Diana+. Diana+ takes some getting used to, but the results are really worth it. As for Vivitar UWS, I don’t think it can do any wrong :P Great lens flare, great cross-processing as well. Go for Vivitar!

  16. Deep In Vogue on January 21st, 2009

Hahah I think I have one of these cameras! I agree with ovenhaven, Vivitar is the way to go :)

  17. The Clothes Horse on January 23rd, 2009

In regards to your comment/question: I mixed the varnish in a small tin. I think that type of container keeps it from drying out too fast, but I only mixed enough for one coat on my nails–I didn’t save any and I moved quick.

  18. gurge on January 24th, 2009

ah. 110 cameras! i bought one from japan and tons of 110 film! However, after the first time, I couldnt find anywhere that develops it Theres only one i found in chinatown who still has the 110 machine and only develops in black and white. How are you developing the 110 film?

  19. hannah on January 24th, 2009

gotta love them! film is the best.

  20. Bigdaddy on January 28th, 2009

This lot of cameras looks all to familiar, haha. All of a sudden there is just a collection, i completely know what your talking about.
P.s. you inspire me to use ebay once again, you always get the best stuff!

  21. melly on January 29th, 2009

gurge: i managed to find out that Triple D at Burlington Square can develop 110 film!

eh melly, i realised u seldom go msn anymore.. so gotta ask u here! normally do u ship directly to SG when bidding on ebay or u go thru conceirge? any diff in total cost u think? i just won a bid for a yashica mg 1 and im crossing my fingers, the condition is nt too terrible..

it was the cheapest of the lot and looks alright. pics werent clear but i spotted some sticky/dust stain in front :( any trusty place u know that does cleaning?

    Cheers
    Gracie

  24. gracie on September 23rd, 2009

if you asked why did i bid upon seeing that e condition werent great, well - cos it was ending and i was competing with someone else! bleahh. seller then got back saying exterior condion is 8/10. bleahhh.
THE WORST THING WAS - right after i won the bid, i found the exact model at a MUCH BETTER condition, almost mint and it was a starting bid of 0.98USD, 19hrs more to go! BOO!

(v upset even though i won the bid at 11.50. direct shipping was a killer)
